Growing SaladsWhen buying seeds always read the packets and instructions carefully. These will give you specific info on what time of year to sow seeds and plant out.
Lettuce is a mainstay of most salads and there are many types of leafy vegetables. At Suttons delivery is free on seeds.
They also do lettuce mixtures which offer a mix of seeds suitable for sowing together. Sow a few seeds at short intervals to ensure a good supply of lettuce. Suttons also sell other vegtables seeds so you could grow beetroot, radishes (very easy), celery, rocket, tomatoes, spring onions, beans and carrots. The easiest is probably radishes - these are great for kids to grow as they're really quick. Broad beans are also easy and need little tending apart from watering so the kids can enjoy these as a introduction to gardening. If you want year round lettuce you'll need either a greenhouse or cold frames. Endives, Chicory, chinese cabbage can be gorwn in a green house. Outdoors you can plant land cress, corn sald, purslane, red chicory cabbages (red, white and green varietys) Chillies can also be grown in the UK - and you can grow these on your
windowsill too.
Growing tomatoes upside down - this is an unusual approach! I've seen them in hanging baskets in the UK, but this takes that a step further. |
