Picking a garden shed - things to consider

Have you any ideas about what sort of shed you want. Do you want a potting shed to pot up a few plants? Or a huge shed to throw everything in, or one to be tidy with and put the mower in? We aim to help you decide what shed you should buy.

First decide what you want your shed for.

Make a list of all the things you might want to use your shed for.

Storage of mower
Plant pots, potting compost
Potting area
Storage of hosepipe, bikes, boxes, junk,
Putting away garden furniture

Write down your thoughts and then ask other members of the family. It makes sense to know ahead of ordering a shed whether everyone else in the house is planning on offloading items into it.

What is the biggest thing you need to fit in the shed?
Will you need a double door? Again measure the biggest items if you are in any doubt whether they will fit thourgh a single door.

All this will help you decide how big your shed needs to be.

Next you need to consider the area you have to put a shed in.

If you are not sure then get a tape measure and measure the area you have!

Then match up your desired shed size with the space you have to put one in. If space isn't an issue then you're lucky.

Locating the shed:
The area where you are planning to have your shed should clear and free of tree branches or planting , ponds or other obstructions.
The final location should have good and unrestricted access to allow the transfer of large timber building sections. Most sections are too large to pass through a garage pedestrian door or through a house for example.

The base:
The intended base should be firm and level, being of a paved or concrete base construction of no less than the plan size of the building itself. An appropriately solid foundation will support and increase the lifespan of your building. Upon smaller timber buildings, the use of 3"x2" (75 x 50mm) pressure treated timber floor bearers at 18" to 2' centres upon solid, level ground may be satisfactory, but this means of support should not be considered equal to a good base.

Consider how valuable your contents of the shed will be - and therefore how secure your shed needs to be. Can your alarm also be fitted to the shed?
Will you need to contact your insurance company to increase the level of cover?
Does your insurance company have rules about what you need to do to make your shed secure?

Do you want windows? Do they have to open? A shed without opening windows may be too hot to sit in during the heat of summer.

What do you want it to look like? Do you have specific requirements about window placement?
Metal or wooden?
What sort of base do you want your shed to have?

Having answered all these questions we hope you have a clear idea of what sort of shed you are looking for. We can recommend shed store as having one of the biggest ranges of sheds in the uk and the site is very well designed and easy to use. The company is long established and offers safe secure online shopping with low prices and free delivery.
