Growing tayberrys |
I spotted the tayberry a while ago and to the best of my knowledge have never eaten one! They look like long raspberries though so it's certainly possible I have and maybe not known! The tayberry can grow quite huge. I've read someone say in a damp field they've gorwn on 25ft across. Now that'd be impressive for anyone - but is it too big for a domestic garden? I've planted one on my allotment in a bare bit of the raspebrries and am going to plant one today in my back garden. I'm hoping that next year will bring plenty of fruit from it! They only fruit on year old canes which mean as the plant I've got is a single cane then I've got to wait until next year. Propogate them like blackberries - that is hold a stem down with a rock and it'll root itself and make a new plant for you to move away and have some more tayberries! I've read that one plant will feed a family - which sounds fantastic! So I'll hopefully be able to make tayberry jam and pies next year! When fruit is so dear in the supermarket it makes sense to try and grow some at home! It also adds variety as I've not seen them in the supermarket! The thornless one is less vigourous than the thorned plant but from what I've read this is proably a good thing!

All about tayberrysTayberrys grow on canes and are similar in appearance to raspberries. They can grow quite huge though - several metres across so this is something to bear in mind if you only have a small plot. The fruit grows on the previous years growth so the first year you buy a cane you won't have any berries to pick. If you buy a big plant then you should have some! You can buy the Tayberry at each of these shops
